Portico’s ‘Second Nature’ ESG strategy: Nurturing and Growing Talent

Portico ESG strategy, “Second Nature”, is built around four pillars, the expanded strategy will guide our direction of travel over the next three years in continuing to provide a positive workspace for our people, a welcoming space for guests, and a flourishing partnership with our clients, all while minimising our impact on the environment. So, what are the pillars – and how are we tracking against them?

Nurturing and Growing Talent

Encompassing Portico’s commitment to help its people grow and succeed, this pillar focuses on recruitment, learning and development opportunities and further strengthening Portico as an employer of choice within the hospitality sector. Under this pillar, we have already achieved the following:

  • We now offer 77 types of L&D courses and 43 apprenticeship modules
  • In response to employee feedback, we’ve became an Approved Centre with the ILM, the qualification arm of the Institute of Leadership. We now deliver the ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management and the ILM Level 4 Award in Managing Equality and Diversity in an Organisation. As of April 2024, 60+ of employees are registered for, or working towards an ILM qualification
  • Reinstated our relationship with Qualsafe, the trusted partner for the education and training community. We now deliver Mental Health First Aid qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3
  • Held 600 training sessions since early 2023, including 147 live courses for employees, including 26 new training modules. Topics covered include:

    • Learning for dyslexia and dyscalculia
    • Deaf awareness
    • Emergency First Aid
    • Inclusive language
    • Understanding bias
  • Our people have completed 1,345 self-assigned course assignments since 2023

As a mark of our success, our L&D portfolio was recently accredited by The Institute of Learning and Performance (LPI) which recognises that L&D holds a distinguished position within Portico.

The targets we have set ourselves are:

  • Ensuring 100% of team members receive regular career development and performance reviews
  • Filling 40% of management positions internally.
