As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to introduce two of Portico’s Management Degree Apprentices, Ella Newman and Sara Sharifian, who sat down together to share their apprenticeship journeys so far – from their first placements to growing confidence, leadership skills, and a fresh perspective on hospitality.
Ella is currently completing her degree apprenticeship while gaining hands-on experience across the business. Her journey has seen her move into a role shadowing and learning the responsibilities of a Recruitment Advisor, alongside supporting marketing projects as part of her university studies. “Being exposed to all things Portico has really built up my experience – meeting more people, expanding my network, and building my confidence along the way.” – Ella
Sara works at a legal corporate site, where her role is fast-paced and people-focused. Her day-to-day involves engaging with clients, supporting meetings, and gaining valuable insight into the operational side of the business. “A typical day is busy and exciting. You’re constantly engaging with clients and learning how the business environment really works.” – Sara
When reflecting on what surprised them most about their apprenticeships, confidence emerged as a key theme. For Sara, learning how to read people and communicate effectively has been a defining part of her development. “I didn’t realise how important reading people would be. I’ve gone from avoiding phone calls to confidently stepping forward and believing in myself.” – Sara
Both Ella and Sara agree that management and leadership skills have become part of their everyday thinking – from managing time and balancing priorities to supporting and caring for others. “The apprenticeship teaches you how to manage – your time, people, and yourself. And most importantly, how to care about people while doing it.”
When asked how the apprenticeship has shaped her view of hospitality and guest services, Sara summed it up perfectly: “Hospitality isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. It’s about people, care, and the impact you make on those around you.”
Together, Ella and Sara’s stories highlight just how powerful apprenticeships can be, building confidence, developing leadership, and creating meaningful careers centred around people and purpose. We wish both Ella and Sara the very best as they continue their apprenticeship journeys.
Stay tuned as we continue to share more apprentice stories throughout National Apprenticeship Week.
